Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about receipts, imports, budgets, and your Reciptra account.
Receipts & OCR
How do I add a receipt by email?
Forward a payment confirmation or receipt PDF to your personal digital receipt address (shown under Receipts → Add). Reciptra stores the attachment, reads the text, and places it in your inbox for review. You still confirm the amount and merchant before creating an expense.
Why is the receipt total or store name wrong?
OCR reads text from photos and PDFs — it can misread account numbers, partial payments, or utility bill layouts. Always review before saving an expense.
- Open the receipt and tap Extract details again after we ship parser improvements.
- Fix the total, store, and date in the review form if needed.
- Enable Receipt AI help (More → Account) only if you want optional cloud assistance on difficult scans.
Why didn't my forwarded receipt appear right away?
The Receipts inbox refreshes automatically every few seconds while you stay on that tab. Email delivery and processing can take a short moment. Switch to another tab and back, or wait a few seconds — a full page reload is usually not needed.
What is Receipt AI help?
It is off by default. Local OCR and import previews work without AI. When enabled, optional cloud AI runs only after you click a specific action (for example Improve with AI). You can turn it off anytime under More → Account.
Imports & duplicates
Why do I see the same expense twice?
The same payment often arrives twice: once as an email receipt and again on a card or bank statement import. Reciptra compares amount, merchant, and a date window (not just the exact day) and warns you before creating a duplicate.
- Link the receipt to the existing expense instead of creating a new one.
- Delete the duplicate expense if one was already saved.
- Small date gaps (for example email on the 12th, card post on the 15th) are normal for utilities and subscriptions.
Why does an email show the invoice amount instead of what I paid?
Payment emails often list both the full invoice and the amount you actually paid (for example a partial payment). Reciptra prefers lines like You paid or Payment amount over invoice or outstanding balance labels. If it still looks wrong, edit the total in receipt review before saving.
How does bank or card statement import work?
Under More → Tools, upload a CSV or PDF statement or connect a bank via Plaid. Reciptra extracts rows and shows a preview. By default, only transactions that match your store rules are imported — review the preview before confirming.
Security & privacy
Is my banking information secure?
Reciptra is not a bank. Uploaded statement files are processed to extract rows and are not kept longer than needed for import. Plaid handles bank login credentials when you link an account. We store extracted transactions and receipts you choose to keep — not your bank password.
What data does Reciptra store?
Your account email, expenses, budgets, receipt images or PDFs, and optional alert preferences. You can export data or delete your account from the app. Optional AI runs only when you opt in and trigger it.
Alerts & the app
How do budget alerts work?
When you set a budget cap, Reciptra can email you as you approach or exceed it. You can also opt into SMS or browser push on supported devices. Message and data rates from your carrier may apply for SMS.
How do I install Reciptra on my phone?
Reciptra works as a progressive web app (PWA) — no app store required on most phones.
- Android: use the Install app prompt when it appears, or your browser menu → Install app / Add to Home screen.
- iPhone (Safari): tap Share (□↑) → Add to Home Screen → Add.
- Open Reciptra from your home screen for faster receipt access and alerts.
